We are treating our hens with Harakeke for intestinal worms, a big leaf or a few smaller ones tied into a knot in their waterbowl is usually enough to cure them. The root was used for intestinal worms or a purgative in Rongoā -traditional Māori medicine.
With the range of herbs our chickens eat we don’t usually have this problem . We recently brought back our old chooks (where tenants had neglected them) to our block in Tutukaka to retire. Their condition was beyond belief combs hanging over, eyes half open and feet red and sore from walking in mud and poop for too long. Its been a real lesson not to entrust our animals in the care of others and we hope these old girls have a long and happy retirement!
